Ginger's trip to Africa - Oct 2004

I was so lucky to be able to attend a convention in South Africa. Our convention was in Johannesburg. After the convention I decided to take a 5-day Safari. My traveling companion was my best, friend Nicki Chapman. I researched different companies,  asked other travel agents and finally decided on "Big Six Safaris."  They were wonderful! The best part of our trip was our guide Johann. He knew everything from surviving in the jungles, to calming a very upset elephant. The elephant was following the love of his life and the cars got in the way. If you start to back away from an elephant they will charge you. Our guide talked very soothingly to him and he calmed down.

The Lion Sleeps tonight!

We saw a lot of lion prides, most of them consisting of the grandmother, daughters and young cubs. It seemed that we were the ones on display; they just watched us and slept! At night is when they hunt. We saw the pride bring down a cape buffalo. They all worked together like a team, each had its job to do. We never really saw the male lions doing anything but eating and mating!

Giraffe's have the best view!

The giraffes were very peaceful. They ate the top of all the fruit trees. They walked around with the other animals. They also had fun watching us. We could tell by watching the giraffes if there were any predators coming. With their birds' eye view, they were always on the look-out!
